The sequel to “Mary2020”, it reimagines the biblical Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph as a contemporary Black American couple. It humanizes both the parents of Jesus Christ, as well as people of the African Diaspora, by demonstrating that the descendants of enslaved people today and the biblical couple of the past may have more in common than we realize.
It also highlights Joseph’s faithfulness, loyalty, compassion and strong sense of self. In a time where he could have easily had Mary punished and even killed for getting pregnant during their engagement (with a child that was not his), he stayed with her bore the shame and suffering with Mary, and took in Jesus as his own – raising him as his own son. Rather than being reactive, fragile and self-absorbed, Joseph was strong, steadfast and caring – in a situation you could politely call unorthodox. Both Mary and Joseph are powerful examples of faithfulness, loyalty, courage and bravery. They are inspiring for their love for God, and for one another – even in controversial, dangerous times.
