“Muse” was created after a time of reading about and studying the work of two great Baroque painters, Peter Paul Rubens and Titian. I was particularly amazed and inspired how they painted and portrayed women. Inspired by their approach, I wanted to try my hand at creating something similar to their work, but more contemporary and distinctly my own. “Muse” was the result.
The piece celebrates the subject, an anonymous Black woman, as the true work of art. She is the muse that inspires and moves the artist to create. She is the one who’s beauty, nobility and allure drives the artist’s attempts to capture such beauty and grace in their own work. She is the “paragone,” of the Baroque and Renaissance art theory: the embodiment of beauty by which every great artist is judged by their ability to capture.
